Can I shoot on beaters’ day?
Many Young Shots have worked hard through the season beating on a local shoot. Beating is good fun, you usually get paid and there’s an added bonus; sometime in January the keeper may invite you to the beaters’ day and tell you to “bring a gun”.
But can you? Basically, it’s all a matter of how old you are, whether you have a shotgun certificate and whether there is someone to supervise you.
Over 15
- If you have a shotgun certificate you can shoot without supervision.
- If you do not have a shotgun certificate you can only shoot if you are borrowing a gun from the occupier of the land and shooting in their presence.
Under 15
- If you have a shotgun certificate you can shoot provided you ar under the direct supervision of someone of or over 21.
- If you do not have a shotgun certificate you can only shoot if you are borrowing a gun from the occupier of the land and shooting in their presence and under supervision of someone who is 21 or over.
